In January 2022, a Baltimore man became the first person to undergo heart transplantation and received a pig's heart (cross-species) at the Maryland Medical Center. The pig has been genetically engineered through gene editing technology (CRISPR, Clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats) to escape hyper rapid organ rejection. Gene editing technique helps to add, remove or alter genetic material at particular locations in the genome. With this technique we can treat single-gene disorders such as sickle cell anemia, cystic fibrosis, hemophilia, and more complex diseases such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), cancer, heart disease, mental illnesses etc.
